More than 150 years ago, a lawyer named George Graham Vest stood in a courtroom and delivered what would become one of the most beloved tributes to dogs ever written.
Known today as The Eulogy of the Dog, his words continue to touch the hearts of dog lovers around the world.
One line, in particular, has always stayed with me:
“When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.”
What a beautiful description of a dog’s love…
In a world where so much can change—circumstances, relationships, reputations, and fortunes—a dog’s love often remains remarkably steady.
Dogs don’t care about our accomplishments, our appearance, or whether we’ve had a good day or a bad one.
They sit patiently through lonely seasons and curl up beside us when we struggle. They celebrate ordinary moments. They love us on our best days and our worst.
Over the years, I’ve shared my life with many wonderful dogs. I currently share my home with three beloved oldies. Yet with each furry friend, one thing remains remarkably consistent: their loyalty and love.
There is something comforting about coming home to a dog who is simply happy that you’re there—day in and day out.
Perhaps that’s why so many people love Vest’s words. They remind us of a truth dog parents already know deep down. In a world that often feels hurried, uncertain, and conditional, the love of a dog can feel refreshingly faithful, steady, constant…
As constant as the sun.
Maybe that’s one reason God gives us these wonderful companions.
While no earthly love is perfect, our pets often reflect small glimpses of his everlasting love. Through a warm nuzzle, a happy tail, or a faithful friend waiting by the door, we are reminded that love shows up, stays near, and remains present, no matter what.
Today, if a dog is curled up beside you, take a moment to appreciate the gift.
And if you’re remembering a beloved companion who is no longer here, perhaps smile at the memories they left behind.
For me, some of life’s greatest lessons about faithfulness didn’t come from grand motivational speeches or even sermons.
Many came from my wise, furry friends.
