“I lift up my eyes to the mountains…”
Today, May 29th, is Mt. Everest Day, marking the anniversary of the first successful ascent of the world’s highest peak by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
I’ve never climbed Mount Everest, and I don’t plan to. But I have hiked mountain trails with my dogs, and there is something about standing beneath a mountain that always fills me with wonder.
Perhaps it’s the way the peaks rise toward the sky. Or the quiet majesty of a mountain standing strong through storms, seasons, and centuries. Mountains have a way of making us pause, look up, and remember how small we are—and how great God is.
Whenever I see a mountain, I’m reminded of these beautiful words from Psalm 121:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)
Life often feels like a climb.
We all face our own “Everests.” Sometimes it’s grief. Sometimes it’s anxiety, illness, uncertainty, or a challenge that seems too steep to overcome. There are seasons when the trail is rocky and exhausting, and we wonder if we have the strength to keep going.
The good news is that God never asks us to make the climb alone.
The same God who formed the mountains walks beside us on every trail. He sees every step, every stumble, and every weary moment. He knows the path ahead, even when we cannot see around the next bend.
And sometimes, he sends encouragement on four legs.
If you’ve ever hiked with a dog, you know what I mean.
Dogs don’t worry about reaching the summit. They aren’t concerned about how many miles remain. They simply stay present. They notice the breeze, explore the trail, and eagerly take the next step.
There is wisdom in that.
Our dogs often remind us to stop rushing, breathe deeply, and appreciate the journey. They teach us loyalty, perseverance, and the simple joy of sharing the trail with someone we love.
Perhaps that’s one reason their companionship can be so comforting during difficult seasons.
When life feels overwhelming, a wagging tail, a gentle nudge, or a faithful friend walking beside us can remind us that we are not alone.
Today, whether you’re facing a mountain-sized challenge or enjoying a peaceful walk with your furry companion, remember this:
The Creator who made the mountains is walking beside you.
Take the next step. Then the next.
He will be with you every step of the way.
Paws & Pray
Lord, thank you for the majesty of the mountains and the beauty of your creation. Thank you for the reminder that no challenge is too great for you and no trail is ever walked alone. Help me trust you when the climb feels difficult. Give me the courage to keep moving forward, one step at a time. And thank you for the faithful companions—both human and furry—you place along the way. Amen.
