Sharing My Catholic Journey-Part 3, Nothing is Wasted

Happy New Year dear friends!

As I think about the new year, I keep hearing the phrase new beginnings everywhere.

Fresh starts. Clean slates. Starting over.

But as I step into this new year and this season of faith, I’m reminding of another new beginning of sorts…becoming Catholic.

But what I experienced in becoming Catholic wasn’t a new beginning in the way I once imagined, like leaving something behind and starting over.

No—it wasn’t a start-over at all.

Becoming Catholic felt more like a continuation of my faith journey.

Not a rejection of my past faith—not something that was wasted—and not a sudden reset, but a pressing on. The same Jesus I’ve always loved… now known more fully. The same story, unfolding deeper. Like walking a familiar path and realizing there’s more beauty ahead than I ever noticed before.

St. Augustine once wrote,
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

That restlessness makes sense to me now—not as doubt, but as longing. A quiet invitation from God to go deeper.

So maybe this new year doesn’t have to be about fresh starts and starting over. Maybe it’s about continuing forward—with eyes open, roots deepening, and a heart at peace—knowing you are deeply loved exactly where you are, and excited for what God is still unfolding.

And that feels like the truest kind of beginning. 🤍

As this new year begins…

What feels like an invitation to go deeper—in your faith or in your life?

Where might God be gently asking you to keep walking, rather than start over?

Because sometimes growth doesn’t only come from starting fresh, but from realizing that nothing has been wasted—that God has been faithfully using every step, every season, every chapter to lead us forward, and closer to his heart.

A Prayer

Jesus,

As this new year begins, help me trust that I don’t need to start over to be renewed.

Thank you for meeting me on familiar paths and inviting me deeper still.

When my heart feels restless, remind me that it’s longing for you. Root me in your love, open my eyes to the beauty ahead, and give me peace as you continue unfolding your story in my life.

Amen.

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 3:14

Peace be with you,
