One of the sweetest lessons learned from my dogs is the importance of slowing down. Not just slowing down to savor life’s precious moments, but also slowing down to pray—to take time daily to talk to God (and listen), and to share my needs.
An unknown poet wrote: “I got up early one morning, and rushed right into the day. I had so much to accomplish, I didn’t have time to pray. Troubles tumbled about me, and heavier came each task; ‘Why doesn’t God help me?’ I wondered. He answered, ‘You didn’t ask.” I woke up early this morning, and paused before entering the day. I had so much to accomplish that I had to take time to pray.”
Dear friend, of course, you can pray while running full steam ahead 24/7. But how much sweeter it is to slow down and savor time with God. It’s for this that we were created, to walk and talk with God, and enjoy his presence along life’s journey. No need to carry heavy burdens or allow unhealthy thoughts to take residence in your mind. Whatever you’re going through, you can pause and pray, confide in God, and find help for your every need!
The lyrics to an old hymn by Joseph Scriven say it all—“Oh what peace we often forfeit; oh what needless pain we bear; All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.”
Pause and Pray …
Dear God, help me to take time daily to pause and pray. Amen
