They say a dog is man’s best friend… but for me, my dogs were more than that.
They are healers. Helpers. A big part of my journey out of depression. If you’re struggling today—or just need a little encouragement—I hope my story brings comfort.
You’re not alone.
Depression is more common than we think.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), 264 million people live with depression worldwide. In 2017, around 17.3 million aged 18 years or older in the U.S. had experienced at least one major depressive episode. And in 2020, as the pandemic gripped the world, studies showed that depression rates likely tripled.
There are many types of depressive disorders and a wide range of treatments. What I’d like to share here is simply my experience—and how my dogs played a big role in pulling me through. If you’re struggling and have the blessing of a beloved pet, I hope this brings you a little hope for brighter days.
Dogs Are Good for the Soul
Every time I hug my dogs, something shifts in me. I feel a little more hopeful, a little lighter, and just a little bit stronger.
I’ll never forget coming home from an appendectomy. Complications slowed my recovery, and before long, I began slipping into depression. I was scared and confused. I didn’t fully understand what was happening—only that I felt trapped in a very dark place, longing to be free.
Though my family lovingly cared for me, they couldn’t sit with me every moment. That’s where my dogs—my little emotional support therapists—came in.
Each day, my husband would bring one of our dogs into my room to keep me company. Their wagging tails and gentle nudges seemed to say, “Let’s cuddle! What’s the plan today?” Even when I couldn’t match their enthusiasm, their presence lifted my spirits. They’d tune into my mood and simply lie quietly beside me, heads resting on my chest. Their warmth and loyalty were a healing balm.
I truly believe their companionship helped me recover faster—and protected me from a deeper spiral into depression.
Guardian Angel in Fur
At my lowest point, one of my Cavaliers stayed with me for nearly 10 to 12 hours a day. She only left to potty and grab a quick bite. I’m convinced she was my guardian angel in fur—chasing away the darkness and gently reminding me I wasn’t alone.
That’s why I believe so deeply in pet therapy. Dogs who visit hospitals and nursing homes bring something priceless: light, love, and healing through their calming presence and unconditional affection.
A Pet is Like Medicine
After what I experienced, I couldn’t help but look into the science behind it all.
It turns out that interacting with dogs can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase serotonin (the feel-good chemical). Even just 15–30 minutes a day can make a big difference—lowering stress, boosting immunity, and even helping us heal faster. Some doctors are now prescribing pets as part of mental health treatment.
“A pet is a medication without side effects that has so many benefits… I’ve seen how having a pet is like an effective drug. It really does help people.”—Dr. Edward Creagan, Mayo Clinic Oncologist
And don’t forget oxytocin, the “cuddle chemical.” It’s released when we snuggle, play, or simply gaze into our dog’s eyes. It fosters bonding, calm, affection, and emotional healing.
Just a Walk Away from Hope
Some days, the only reason I got out of bed was because of my dogs. Even a short walk down the driveway helped lift the fog.
Walking, snuggling—these became little lifelines anytime I felt blue. I especially felt their power during those long, lonely lockdown days when the world pressed pause. And yes, I even danced with my dogs! They gave me purpose. They gave me joy. They gave me one more reason to get up and try again.
Want to see us in action? Watch our dance moves here!
They say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
I say, “A dog a day keeps the blues away!”
Final Thoughts
If you’re struggling emotionally, please don’t stay silent. Talk to someone you trust. Reach out to a doctor or counselor. And if you have a dog or another pet, let their companionship be part of your healing. Walk with them, play, teach them a new trick—or simply sit in silence together.
Stay connected. Stay hopeful. And live each day with gratitude.
And always remember: God loves you and is with you.
A Prayer for When You’re Struggling
Dear God,
Thank You that I am not alone in my suffering. You see my pain, and You care. Please shine Your light into my darkness and help me heal.
Thank You for the people You’ve placed in my life to care for me—and for the furry friends who offer comfort in such sweet, quiet ways. Thank You for the wagging tails and loyal hearts that remind me I’m loved.
Even when I don’t know what tomorrow holds, I trust You’ll be there—moment by moment, helping me through. Thank You that I am never alone.
Amen.
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
—Deuteronomy 31:8
