“There’s no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.”
Ben Williams
I’ve been through a few rough patches in life—you know, those seasons where sadness hangs around longer than you’d like. And in those moments, more than anything, I just wanted a little relief. I wanted to feel like me again. To smile, to laugh. To feel light.
Sadness is totally normal. We all go through it. But if it sticks around too long, it can start to feel heavy—and sometimes even head toward depression. I’ve been there. So when I start to notice those feelings creeping in, I try to take action.
Thankfully, I’ve got some of the best helpers around—my dogs! I like to call them my little healers (angels really!)… sweet bundles of fur that feel like extensions of God’s grace.
Friend, life gets so hectic sometimes—we can feel like we’re running a never-ending race. When that happens, I tell myself, “Stop. Sit. Snuggle.” It really helps. Try it . . .
If you’re feeling low today and have a dog (or other beloved pet) nearby, pause and snuggle up close. There’s something magical about it. It’s like your pup knows. Their warmth, their presence—it soothes the soul. And those happy hormones? Oh yes, they’ll start showing up! Sometimes it takes time to feel better… so be patient. Trust God. Keep snuggling—even through the tears.
If you don’t have a dog to hug right now, maybe try visiting a local shelter. You could volunteer, offer some cuddles, or just hang out with the animals. I bet they’d love the company—and who knows, you might end up meeting your new best friend. Now that would be a tail-wagging happy ending!
Of course, snuggles are just one piece of the puzzle. If you’re feeling really down, please talk to someone—a good friend, a pastor, or a counselor. And most of all, talk to God. Snuggle close to His heart. He’s always right there, ready to love on you—even in the quiet. Especially in the quiet.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
—Psalm 46:1
