When my dogs jump in my lap and lavish me with kisses, I truly feel MUCH LOVED! I guess they think I’m pretty awesome and lovable! Well, I don’t know about that LOL! I have my down days, like everyone else. But experiencing their unconditional love does inspire me to strive to live up to that love. So that is my New Years Goal—to be the kind of person my dog already thinks I am!
2020 has been a chaotic a year for millions around the world. And if you’re dealing with depression, know that you’re not alone.
To give you perspective, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (AADA), in 2015, around 16.1 million adults aged 18 years or older in the U.S. experienced at least one major depressive episode, which represents 6.7 percent of all American adults. In 2020, with the global pandemic gripping the world, COVID-19 has likely tripled depression rate, study finds.
There are different types of depressive disorders, and all sorts of treatment options. In this blog post, I would simply like to share my personal experience with depression, and share how my dogs played a major role in pulling me through. If you are struggling with depression, and have the good fortune to have a dog (or other beloved pet), I pray this article will offer hope for better days.
How I Overcame Depression, with the Help of My Dogs
During my prayer time this morning I felt like I heard this question in my spirit—
If you had a common enemy, would you not stand against him?
That got me thinking about the widening political divide. We cannot be ignorant of the devils schemes. We have a common enemy— the devil! And he’s baiting us into war! People are not our enemy, the devil is. Hear God’s Word:
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”—Ephesians 6:11-12
Years ago, depression and anxiety tried to ruin my life.
But what the enemy meant for evil, God worked for good! I’ve written my story below, and also share it in this video set to the music “Praise You in This Storm”. I choreographed and danced it to tell of God’s goodness and love, and also as a testament to the power of praise and worship. Watch the video then read the story below to learn how God set me free! I pray it will be an encouragement to you, especially during this trying season with the global pandemic.
“You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.” Psalm 30:11
