2020 has been a chaotic a year for millions around the world. And if you’re dealing with depression, know that you’re not alone.
To give you perspective, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (AADA), in 2015, around 16.1 million adults aged 18 years or older in the U.S. experienced at least one major depressive episode, which represents 6.7 percent of all American adults. In 2020, with the global pandemic gripping the world, COVID-19 has likely tripled depression rate, study finds.
There are different types of depressive disorders, and all sorts of treatment options. In this blog post, I would simply like to share my personal experience with depression, and share how my dogs played a major role in pulling me through. If you are struggling with depression, and have the good fortune to have a dog (or other beloved pet), I pray this article will offer hope for better days.
How I Overcame Depression, with the Help of My Dogs
Wouldn’t it be nice to have angels watching over us? Well, that’s not wishful thinking. According to Psalm 91, it’s Truth. If you’re facing a giant today and need protection, read on.
Psalm 91 is a beautiful psalm of trust in God’s loving care and protection. It’s incredibly comforting to read and pray, and realize that God has a whole host of heavenly messengers ready to do his bidding— to guard those who take shelter in him, who trust him with all their heart. May God watch over you and protect you, and infuse you with his peace today as you meditate on this awesome Psalm and commit to trusting in him!
Let’s pray Psalm 91 from the Voice translation. Pray it in the first person, for example in verse 1 we’d pray:
I will take refuge in the shelter of the Most High and will be safe in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Eternal…”
During my prayer time this morning I felt like I heard this question in my spirit—
If you had a common enemy, would you not stand against him?
That got me thinking about the widening political divide. We cannot be ignorant of the devils schemes. We have a common enemy— the devil! And he’s baiting us into war! People are not our enemy, the devil is. Hear God’s Word:
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”—Ephesians 6:11-12
