Toilet Paper Thoughts for 2020

Greetings! My name is TP. We’ve already met, countless times actually . . . and under some pretty dire and messy circumstances.

For years, I’ve been there for you, bringing you the comforts you depend on. But as 2020 comes to a close, I’ve got a little bone to pick . . .

For years, I felt neglected. There I was on the shelves of all the grocery and convenience stores, stacked on top of all my TP family and friends. People grabbed us off the shelves, but basically took us for granted. No one thought about us, talked about us, and who knows, maybe they didn’t even really care we existed. At least that’s how I felt— small and insignificant.

Then, everything changed in 2020 . . .

The pandemic hit!

People ran to the stores to stock up on essentials. Suddenly, me and the TP community mattered. We were “essential!” We were flying off the shelves at rates never before seen. Even the news talked about us, and stores had to limit purchases to 1-2 TP packs per family. Everyone wanted us. And when they found us, they felt truly grateful! I was on cloud nine!

I recall one day a lady walked by the toilet paper aisle feverishly looking for me, but there were no rolls to be found. Then, she spotted a roll way back in the corner. She paused for a second, looking at the price which was way more expensive than before the pandemic. But she still bought me! Later that week, being the TP supply was still low, two folks actually got into an argument over me. I’m not for people arguing and all, but once again, I felt really important.

It’s nice to feel appreciated. . .

Deep in my heart though I know that one day, when the 2020 pandemic is behind us, people may forget about me again, and take me for granted. But I do hope that won’t be the case. I hope people will always remember to be grateful for the little things in life, of which there are sooo many!

Pause and think of all the little things you may have taken for granted all these years—whether it’s something seemingly small like toilet paper or tap water, or bigger like the doctor and dentist, or even the air we breathe—how do you feel about them now? Sometimes you never realize how much you need something until it’s lacking.

May I offer a little humble advice?

Don’t wait until things are gone to feel gratitude. Be grateful today—for small things, big things, and everything in between. I think that is the secret to feeling content and happy, no matter the circumstances.

Well, that’s all I’ve got to say. It felt good to get that off my roll.

Okay, signing off for now . . .

I’m sure we’ll see each other later today.

Signed, your close friend,

TP

    1. So true Annie! I think some of the most essential blessings are right under our nose, for which we too often take for granted. Oxygen is definitely one of them! Merry Christmas to you and your family dear friend! God bless xx
