Election Week [Short Uplifting Thoughts]

“Dogs need to sniff the ground; it’s how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a big giant newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued in the next yard.” —Dave Barry

It’s election week! For some, it’s a week of excitement. For others, it’s a week filled with anxiety. If you’re one of those who is struggling with anxiety, I’d like to offer a bit of inspiration learned from my dogs.

My dogs are constantly sniffing around. Whether they are sniffing in the yard or in the house, they often seem enthralled in something that has captured their attention. That “something” could be the scent of smelly socks, food, the neighbor’s doggie, some other animal, or anything really.

Personally, I think humans are a lot like them. We too are constantly sniffing around, being lead by the things that capture our senses. Right now, I’d say most Americans are captured by the election news cycle. We’ve got our noses glued to the TV, and we’re being led whichever way those enticing scents take us. I’m not sure that’s such a good thing, because the news typically thrives on sensational headlines that can make us more anxious and afraid …

Current events, especially during an election cycle (not to mention a pandemic), can be hard to read about. There’s so much unrest, heartache, and devastation. When we keep dwelling on all that, we’re often lead down a path of despair. But here’s the good news! There’s lots of uplifting news and stories out there, and if you can sniff them out, they’ll make your heart glad! And don’t forget that the BEST place to get your news is from God’s Word.

God’s Word is a big giant newspaper of life events, and yes, it is very relevant to us today. The difference with God’s newspaper and the world’s news is that God knows the beginning from the end, and he is the only one that can be fully trusted! When we read God’s Word and meditate on his promises, we’re better able to filter current events through the lens of Truth. Instead of being discouraged, we remain hopeful. Instead of being shaken, we remain steady and confident, because we know that God loves us and has a plan for our lives.

Watching election news is exciting for sure! And there’s nothing wrong with being informed and aware. After all, politics affects all of our lives. But may I suggest to take some time away from watching TV this week to meditate on God’s wonderful love letter to you, his Word. And no matter what happens after election day, keep your nose in God’s Word. Trust his promises and let them lead you to pleasant places! Stay well, dear friends, and don’t lose sight of what truly matters in life.

Pause and pray. . .

Dear God, I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I do know that you hold tomorrow. Please help me to keep my eyes fixed on you. Amen

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” -Isaiah 26:3

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Eternal, “plans for peace, not evil, to give you a future and hope—never forget that.” -Jeremiah 29:11 (Voice)

    1. Hi Sandi,
I’m so glad to hear from you! I was hiking recently and your sweet blog about your mountain camping experience came to mind. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since we saw April, and mourned her passing. I pass the cemetery where she lays every week. Each time she comes to mind. Hope you’re doing well. Miss you. Lots of love xx
