Pet lovers, discover the profound life lessons from dogs hidden in the joyful greetings of our furry friends in this heartwarming excerpt from “Pawz & Pray: Finding Joy in the Journey with God, Family, and Furry Friends.”

Married, a mother of two children, I finally felt we were ready for a family pet. My husband conceded (well, I didn’t ask him. Oops!). And so, we brought home a cuddly Labrador retriever puppy! Goldy was our sunshine during rainy days, and the stable, strong force that made us all feel continually protected and loved. I stand in awe of all the wonderful things she taught me.

One thing that has always struck me is the minute I came home Goldy was always there with a tail-wagging greeting. Her whole body would shake, rattle, and roll in a symphony of joy! Even old age didn’t prevent her from lifting her arthritic body from her comfy bed to welcome me. Her greeting was a bit slower in tempo, but it never failed to lift my spirits and make me feel like the most special person on earth!

Short Story for Dog Lovers
How do we greet those we love?
  • What if we ran to the door in joyous anticipation of a loved one coming home?
  • What if we realized that each day could be our last, and we treasured each moment with those we loved?
  • What if we remembered all the soldiers who never came home, and realize how lucky we are to have a loved one walk through the door?
  • What if we would forgive and forget, and greet each day as a new beginning?
  • What if we learned to wag more and bark less at those we love?
  • What if each morning we greeted God with a prayer of thanks?

Next time your loved one comes home, try a genuine “tail wagging” greeting . . . how about a hug and kiss, a listening ear or a gentle smile? Adapt to their mood and just be in their presence as a kindred spirit. Sometimes it’s the best way to say, “I love you.”

Father, thank you for all my loved ones. Help me never let anything get in the way of showing them a genuine tail wagging greeting. Amen.

Pawz & Pray Book Review

“Leila’s book has been a true inspiration to me. It makes you focus on what’s really important in life. The author gives us great examples on how we can have a closer walk with God by following the lead that our pets give us in their everyday life. “Pawz & Pray” encourages us to put our worry and anxiety aside and take time to enjoy the things God has put right in front of us. This book has touched my heart in an indescribable way. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals and wants to have a closer connection to our Heavenly Father.”
