Happiness Tip: Count Your Blessings Not Your Sorrows

Secret to happiness

Happiness Tip: Count your blessings not your sorrows

As the leaves change color, I’m getting excited for one of my favorite upcoming holiday celebrations– Thanksgiving! Not so much because of the food and fellowship, (although those are awesome!), but because of the focus on gratitude. There’s something about being thankful and counting my blessings that makes me happy. Not just smiley happy, but really happy, deep inside. Praying you’ll experience greater joy today as you lift your heart to God.

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 107:1).

Today is a new day filled with things to be thankful for. But if you’re feeling a tad blue, you may be tempted to go through your day and count your sorrows, and forget to count your blessings. Been there, done that, as I’m sure we all have. The result is often a troubled heart. Thankfully, there’s an awesome antidote to chase away the blues— counting our blessings.

God wants us to be happy, and experience the joy of His presence. As we recall our blessings and meditate on God’s Word we begin to see that joy is not only possible, but available moment by moment, as we apply God’s truth to our life. One of the most powerful truths I’ve learned from scripture is that counting my blessings fills my heart with joy. If you’d like to experience more joy, try it. What do you have to lose?

Stay thankful 24/7. Count your blessings, rather than counting your sorrows. Call to mind God’s blessings moment by moment, especially when things seem at their worse. A thankful heart takes the focus off our troubles and calms the anxious heart. No matter how bad we feel, there’s always something to be thankful for. We just need to pause and look a little more carefully. . .

Germany Kent writes, “Take time daily to reflect on how much you have. It may not be all that you want but remember someone somewhere is dreaming to have what you have.

As we count our blessings, our focus shifts from fear to faith, and the weight we were carrying will be lifted by God. Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”—Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

Are you ready to count? Here’s a quick list I made to help you get started . . .

Gratitude List

Father God, thank you for all your blessings. You’re so good! Help me to be thankful for big and little things, and everything in between, through every season, no matter what. Amen
