I will lift my eyes to the hills…
When I’m struggling with emotional or physical pain that drags on and on, I typically want to look down and contemplate how unfair life seems. But I’ve learned from experience that doing the very opposite is the key to victory. The Psalmist writes, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).
But that makes no sense!
Yea, I get that. But why not look up? There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain. Look to God, pray, meditate on His Word, give thanks, sing His praise, and contemplate His love for you. I know it’s hard to go against our natural instinct, which typically is to wallow in pain. I’ve been been there. But do me a favor, just peek upwards, go ahead, even for a moment…
Start talking to God about your pain. And if you can’t talk, it’s okay to be silent or cry. The most important thing is never give up on God. He’s certainly not giving up on you.
Someone out there is in pain, and I just want you to know that you’re not alone. My guess is almost everyone reading this has either experienced a painful valley in the past, is waking through one now, or is dreading they’ll walk into a valley down the road. Life is hard, there’s no doubt. Jesus told us in this world we’d have troubles. So our hope can’t be in this world, but in something greater. That “something greater” I found in Jesus Christ. He is my hope, my all in all, my comfort in the storm, and He’s been my companion through every valley.
Dear friend, if you’re suffering tonight, please look to God for comfort. Lift your eyes. Don’t stop praying or reading His Word, and never lose hope.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” – Romans 15:13
Hope be with you!
