How I Found Relief From Sadness

"There's no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face." Ben Williams

“There’s no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.”

Ben Williams

While trudging through a season of sadness, there was one thing I longed for more than anything else—RELIEF! In other words, I wanted to be happy again.

Sadness is a normal human emotion, but when it lingers, depression may be looming on the horizon. Having experienced both at different times in my life, I knew to take quick action …

Thankfully, I had several willing helpers to show me the way out of my despair—my dogs! I call them my little healers . . . aka extensions of God’s grace!

Dear friend, if you’re feeling sad today, and you’re fortunate enough to live with a dog, sit awhile and snuggle with your puppy (or any beloved pet), and watch those happy hormones come to life! If you don’t have a dog to hold, try visiting or volunteering at a shelter. I’m sure they’d be thrilled to have some extra hands to help care for and love on the dogs and cats. Who knows, you may even end up adopting one! Now that would be a happy ending for all!

Of course there are numerous other ways to overcome sadness. I’d encourage you to talk to someone about your feelings— a friend, pastor, or a trained counselor. Mostly, I’d encourage you to talk to God. He’s your most powerful and present help in times of need.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Psalm 46:1
