Did you say, “Love your ENEMIES”?
Lord, surely you don’t mean to actually LOVE them? Maybe you mean to politely ignore them . . .
These are thoughts that run through my head when I read certain challenging Bible verses. But there’s no way around this one. We are to
LOVE our enemies,
DO GOOD to those who hate us,
BLESS those who curse us,
And PRAY for those who hurt us.
Love, do good, bless, pray for . . . I wonder if God is thinking, “What part of this verse don’t you get?”
Admittedly, it’s hard to love those who’ve hurt us or our loved ones. Dear friends, may I suggest a little visual to help.
Imagine yourself standing on level ground with your enemies, rather than above them. In this way, you’ve positioned yourself according to God’s Word—”For we ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). It’s rather humbling to stand on level ground with our enemies, and recognize that it is only by GOD’S GRACE, that we ourselves are forgiven.
I leave you with this beautiful verse, a reminder that while we were yet sinners, Christ extended His love for us. May God help us to demonstrate His love for the world, by dying to ourselves, and loving our enemies. Amen
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)
Hope be with you!
